The Biomedical Equipment Technology, AAS Degree at University of Puthisastra trains and prepares students in installing, operating, troubleshooting, calibrating and repairing biomedical instruments, equipment and support systems. The BMET program offers courses that expose students to a wide range of instruments and equipment located in hospitals and clinics across the nation. Emphasis is placed on preventive and safety inspections to ensure biomedical equipment meets local and national safety standards. The Biomedical field is a fast growing field with the demand for qualified technicians.
BMET coursework at UP provides a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, electronics, and anatomy, physiology, networking and troubleshooting techniques. Some courses will include job experience and job shadowing, as well as people skills and communication, both in written and oral form.
Endorsed by both the Ministry of the Health and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, and Duke University, UP’s Biomedical Equipment Technology (BMET) curriculum utilizes decades of combined experience to provide students with strong theoretical foundations and extensive practical work to ensure graduates are competent practitioners, ready to meet the needs of today’s health facilities. The course is 114 Credit Points.

Course Description by Subject
Medical Equipment Technology
This subject covers specific items of equipment found in medical facilities – correct usage and principles of operation, schematics, routine maintenance, teardowns, troubleshooting and repair as well as the fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology that apple to that equipment. The Equipment covered:
|Semester 1||Suction Devices, Sterilizers, Blood Pressure Devices, Microscopes|
|Semester 2||Oxygen Concentrators, Anesthesia Machines, Respirators, Ventilators|
|Semester 3||Patient Monitor, ECG, Defibrillator|
|Semester 4||Imaging Equipment, Ultrasound, X-Ray|
|Semester 5||Laboratory Equipment|
|Semester 6||ICU and Operating Theatre Equipment including Neonatal Care|
Biomedical Workshop Skills
This subject covers general skills needed or the Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs) in the workshop. Students learn various hand skills as well as the use of tools and test and diagnostic equipment Electronics is a major focus of this subject and Mathematics is also taught.
Healthcare Technology Management
Based on the “How to Manager” set of manuals for Healthcare Technology Management in use in many countries around the world, this subject gives students the management tools to be able to manage the entire life cycle of medical equipment, from procurement and donation through installation and commissioning, spare parts and budgets, planned maintenance and eventual decommissioning.
The internet is a highly valuable resource for Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs_ and English is the language of the internet. Hence, this subject aims to develop a student’s English and Computer skills along with their ability to communicate professionally, both locally and more broadly with the global community.
A key element of the course is the clinical placements “On the Job” training where students start to practice their learnings right from the first semester. During this time, students are regularly visited and in contact with mentors who provide guidance and assistance to the student as they seek to do the work of Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs).
If a student is currently employed in a related field then they may take a significant portion of their clinical placement at their normal place of employment and supplement it with some time a medical facility. This will be decided by the Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs) is working in collaboration with National and Provincial Hospitals to provide clinical sites for placements.
Graduates will possess the skills necessary to obtain an entry-level Biomedical Technician Position. Recent graduates have proven their understanding of many of the requirements of Healthcare Technology Management, such as maintenance, repair and record-keeping for medical equipment. Graduates have also proven competence with biomedical test equipment and basic testing techniques on common medical devices through hands-on competency tests.
Graduates should qualify for employment opportunities in both private and public hospitals, dental & optical clinics, clinical laboratories, contract management firms, independent service organizations, and manufacturer’s field service. Some BMET graduates work as sales representatives in the field of Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) whereas some work as Lecturers and Trainers at any Medical School and University.
Application for tis course must have a high school certificate.
The tuition fees cover all costs directly related to the course including class notes, handouts, consumables, tools, medical equipment for teaching and supervision during clinical placements.
Interested applicants must complete the Biomedical Equipment Technology (BMET) Application Form and the UP Student Application Form and return to UP Admin.
